Life That Humbles and Honors

In the Gospel, Jesus tells of two people who go to pray. One lists his good works; the other simply says, “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” (Luke 18:13) Only the humble one goes home justified.

God sees the truth of the heart. Sirach reminds us, “The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds.” (Sirach 35:17) He hears the cry of the poor, the widow, the orphan—the ones who are unseen and unheard. He always has.

Respect Life Month is about that kind of seeing. To be pro-life is to live with eyes open—to notice the sacredness of every person, especially those the world forgets. The unborn child. The refugee. The elderly neighbor. The family struggling quietly in the pew behind us.

St. Paul, nearing the end of his race, says, “I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7) Faith like that doesn’t make us proud—it makes us poured out. It draws us to protect, to defend, and to honor the image of God in others.

This week, ask for the grace to see as God sees. To see dignity where others see inconvenience. To see worth where others see weakness.

That’s what it means to live the Gospel of Life.

Vida que Humilla y Honra

En el Evangelio, Jesús habla de dos personas que van a orar. Una enumera sus buenas obras; la otra simplemente dice: “Oh Dios, ten compasión de mí, que soy pecador.” (Lucas 18,13) Solo el humilde vuelve a casa justificado.

Dios ve la verdad del corazón. El libro del Eclesiástico nos recuerda: “La oración del humilde atraviesa las nubes.” (Eclesiástico 35,17) Él escucha el clamor del pobre, de la viuda, del huérfano; de aquellos que no son vistos ni escuchados. Siempre lo ha hecho.

El Mes de Respeto a la Vida trata precisamente de esa manera de ver. Ser provida es vivir con los ojos abiertos, reconociendo lo sagrado en cada persona, especialmente en quienes el mundo olvida: el niño por nacer, el refugiado, el vecino anciano, la familia que lucha en silencio en la banca detrás de nosotros.

San Pablo, al acercarse al final de su carrera, dice: “He conservado la fe.” (2 Timoteo 4,7) Una fe así no nos llena de orgullo, sino que nos vacía de nosotros mismos. Nos impulsa a proteger, defender y honrar la imagen de Dios en los demás.

Esta semana, pidamos la gracia de ver como Dios ve: ver dignidad donde otros ven inconveniencia, ver valor donde otros ven debilidad.

Eso es vivir el Evangelio de la Vida.
