January 11 – The Baptism of the Lord

The Baptism of the Lord was not simply a moment to remember; it was a revelation that demanded a response.

Jesus entered the waters of the Jordan freely—not because He needed baptism, but so that through Him the waters might bring new life to us. In doing so, He revealed both who He is and who we are called to be. Baptism is not optional, and it is not the end; it is the beginning of a life claimed by God.

This is why the Church baptizes infants. Baptism is not meant to be a reward for understanding; it is a gift that gives us a new identity. The Catechism teaches that it is “the basis of the whole Christian life… the gateway to life in the Spirit” (CCC 1213). Before we ever chose God, He chose us. In baptism, we are claimed as His children, freed from sin, and given a new identity. Who we are in Christ comes first; how we live it flows from that reality.

Baptism sets us on mission. The water marked us. The question is whether our lives still reflect it.

Baptism begins a life meant to be lived—daily, deliberately, and devoted to Christ.

El Bautismo del Señor no fue simplemente un momento para recordar; fue una revelación que exigía una respuesta.

Jesús entró libremente en las aguas del Jordán, no porque necesitara el bautismo, sino para que, a través de Él, las aguas nos dieran una nueva vida. Al hacerlo, reveló tanto quién es Él como quiénes estamos llamados a ser nosotros. El bautismo no es opcional, y no es el final; es el comienzo de una vida reclamada por Dios.

Por eso la Iglesia bautiza a los niños. El bautismo no es una recompensa por comprender; es un don que nos da una nueva identidad. El Catecismo enseña que es «la base de toda la vida cristiana... la puerta de entrada a la vida en el Espíritu» (CIC 1213). Antes de que nosotros eligiéramos a Dios, Él nos eligió a nosotros. En el bautismo, somos reclamados como sus hijos, liberados del pecado y se nos da una nueva identidad. Lo primero es quiénes somos en Cristo; cómo lo vivimos fluye de esa realidad.

El bautismo nos pone en misión. El agua nos marcó. La pregunta es si nuestras vidas aún lo reflejan.

El bautismo da comienzo a una vida que debe ser vivida —diariamente, deliberadamente y dedicada a Cristo.
