January 18 – Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time invites us to notice what the Church is doing in moments we might otherwise overlook. John the Baptist had been prepared from before birth to recognize the Messiah—he leapt in Elizabeth’s womb at the presence of Christ (Luke 1:41–44). Yet at the Jordan, he truly saw Him, and his mission became clear: “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). This is the heart of our faith: Jesus is the perfect, innocent sacrifice, taking on the weight of the world’s sin so that we might be reconciled to God. John points to Christ and testifies to His identity. For us, baptism is not just a ritual—it is our entry into Christ, a gift that makes us His children and calls us to witness in the world.

Isaiah reminds us that God’s calling is never small: “I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). Every Christian is called to bear witness—not in grand gestures alone, but in the ordinary rhythms of life—so that the world might see Christ in our words, actions, and choices.

John shows us how we too can testify to our Lord: by seeing, receiving, and pointing to Christ.

El segundo domingo del tiempo ordinario nos invita a fijarnos en lo que hace la Iglesia en momentos que, de otro modo, podríamos pasar por alto. Juan el Bautista había sido preparado desde antes de nacer para reconocer al Mesías: saltó en el vientre de Isabel ante la presencia de Cristo (Lucas 1, 41-44). Sin embargo, en el Jordán, lo vio realmente y su misión quedó clara: «He aquí el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo» (Juan 1, 29). Este es el corazón de nuestra fe: Jesús es el sacrificio perfecto e inocente, que asume el peso del pecado del mundo para que podamos reconciliarnos con Dios. Juan señala a Cristo y da testimonio de su identidad. Para nosotros, el bautismo no es solo un ritual, es nuestra entrada en Cristo, un don que nos convierte en sus hijos y nos llama a dar testimonio en el mundo.

Isaías nos recuerda que el llamado de Dios nunca es pequeño: «Te haré luz de las naciones, para que mi salvación llegue hasta los confines de la tierra» (Isaías 49:6). Todo cristiano está llamado a dar testimonio, no solo con grandes gestos, sino en el ritmo cotidiano de la vida, para que el mundo pueda ver a Cristo en nuestras palabras, acciones y decisiones.
