Saints Under the Dome: St. José Sánchez del Río

Saint José Sánchez del Río

was a young Mexican Catholic who became a symbol of faith and courage during the Cristero War in the 1920s. Born on March 28, 1913, in Sahuayo, Michoacán, Mexico, José grew up in a devout Christian family. In 1926, anti-Catholic sentiments fueled by the Mexican government led to the persecution of Catholics, and the Cristero War ensued. At the age of 14, José joined the Cristero forces, defying the government's attempt to suppress Catholicism. His bravery and commitment to defending his faith made him a notable figure among the Cristeros. Unfortunately, José was captured by government forces in early 1928. Despite being tortured and pressured to renounce his faith, José remained steadfast. He refused to deny his Catholic beliefs and proclaimed, "Viva Cristo Rey y Santa María de Guadalupe" (Long live Christ the King and Holy Mary of Guadalupe). His unwavering faith and refusal to surrender earned him the admiration of both fellow prisoners and those who witnessed his courage. On February 10, 1928, José Sánchez del Río was brutally martyred at the young age of 14. He was forced to walk barefoot to his grave, and before his execution, his captors cut the soles of his feet. Despite the pain and suffering, José continued to pray and express his love for God. His last words were a declaration of faith, forgiveness for his executioners, and a plea for his family to also forgive.

Canonized in 2016,

Saint José Sánchez del Río inspires the global Christian community, especially the youth. At St. Ann Parish, we have chosen to include him in the dome because he embodies a charism of our church, emphasizing the empowerment of young disciples to boldly embrace their faith. José's bravery serves as an encouragement for all to proclaim "Viva Cristo Rey” when facing life's challenges. His unwavering commitment to Christ serves as a beacon, inspiring all to navigate the complexities of the modern world with boldness, courage, and unwavering dedication to truth. José's story becomes a cornerstone, affirming that the path to sainthood is a lived reality. His life can help guide us to speak the truth and tall in adversity.
