The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is the process by which both unbaptized adults and those baptized in other faiths become Catholic. It is a spiritual formation process beginning each year in September and culminating with entry into the Catholic Church at Easter Vigil as the candidate receives the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism (if not previously baptized in another Christian denomination), Confirmation, and the Eucharist. RCIA continues during the Easter season for the Period of Mystagogy.
RCIA sessions are held on Sunday mornings, starting at 9:15 am and lasting until approximately 11:30 am.
The RCIA process is comprised of four phases.
-
Period of Inquiry (Evangelization and Pre-Catechumenate) - Participants receive both doctrinal and spiritual preparation in an effort to deepen an inner adherence to the Church.
-
Period of Cathechumenate - Participants are given guidance and formation aimed at training them in the Christian life.
-
Period of Purification and Enlightenment - Coincident with the liturgical season of Lent, participants join the faith community in interior reflection and examination of conscience.
- Period of Mystagogy - Participants become fully integrated into the faith community by going through the period of post-baptismal catechesis or mystagogy.
